A growing controversy within the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has prompted the Forum of Zonal Coordinators to seek the intervention of the association’s Senate leadership.
In a formal letter addressed to Senate President Dist. Sen. Ibeabuchi Moses Onyia, the Forum raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the reported removal of NANS Zone A Coordinator, Comr. Nura Baba Waziri.
The student leaders argued that the issue extends beyond an individual office holder and touches on the broader responsibility of safeguarding the integrity of the NANS Constitution while ensuring that democratic processes are upheld across the association.
According to the Forum, several efforts had previously been made to foster reconciliation among all parties involved, including interventions by former NANS President, Comr. Olushola Oladoja, alongside consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The communication also referenced matters relating to an official vehicle allegedly linked to the dispute, noting that questions remain regarding decisions taken after the vehicle was reportedly recovered.
For the Forum, the principal concern is whether the process that led to the Coordinator’s removal complied with constitutional provisions. The Coordinators maintained that elected officials should only be removed through procedures expressly recognized by the NANS Constitution.
They warned that permitting actions outside established constitutional frameworks could create uncertainty for elected student leaders across other zones and structures of the association.
The Forum therefore called on the Senate President to provide clarity on the matter, exercise the Senate’s constitutional responsibilities, and ensure that the principles of due process and constitutional supremacy remain the foundation of governance within NANS.
