The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has welcomed the Inspector-General of Police's directive aimed at tackling the illegal possession of firearms across Nigeria.

The student body described the directive as an important step towards reducing violent crimes that continue to threaten campuses and communities.

While acknowledging the importance of stronger action against criminals, NANS emphasized that law enforcement officers must operate within the provisions of the Constitution.

The association stated that every operation should prioritize arrest, investigation, and prosecution wherever possible, adding that the use of lethal force should remain a last resort.

NANS also advised students to avoid handling suspicious situations themselves and instead provide useful information to security agencies whenever criminal activities are observed.

The association appealed to Nigerian students to remain vigilant, cooperate with lawful security operations, and reject every form of criminality capable of threatening peaceful academic activities.

According to NANS Southwest, restoring public confidence in security institutions requires professionalism, accountability, and respect for human dignity.
