Students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) may soon begin to see major improvements in healthcare and welfare services after a meeting between the university management and the leadership of NANS Southwest Zone D.

The meeting, led by Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode (BILLIONCODES) and UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor Professor Odunayo Clement Adeboye, focused on the tragic death of the late Osunlakin Grace and other concerns affecting students across the university.

For many students, the biggest takeaway from the meeting is that the university has promised several immediate reforms. According to the Vice-Chancellor, all campus health centres will now operate on a 24-hour basis, while another health centre will be established at the Ifetedo Campus.

The university also promised to:

  • Upgrade and strengthen health facilities across all campuses.
  • Provide solar-powered electricity in all health centres.
  • Make ambulances available for emergencies.
  • Recruit more qualified doctors and nurses.
  • Address student concerns around healthcare access and welfare support.

During the meeting, the Students' Union President, Comrade Oremokun Shedrack Imoleayo, presented a list of student demands. These included the relocation of the Ifetedo health centre, review of TISHIP and HMO code generation processes, repair of the university ambulance, provision of essential medical equipment such as a nebulizer machine, and the immediate reopening of the Welfare Director's portal.

Management reportedly agreed to implement most of the requests. The Vice-Chancellor said the only issue beyond the university's direct control is the demand for improved healthcare facilities in communities surrounding the campuses, which falls under the Osun State or Federal Government.

Another major outcome is the creation of a University Committee on Health Services. The committee will include student representatives from each campus and will review the circumstances surrounding the student's death, the protest that followed, and the state of healthcare delivery across the university. The committee is expected to submit its report within one week.

Students also received an update on school activities. The Vice-Chancellor said the Welfare Director's portal will be reopened immediately, while academic activities are expected to resume within the next two weeks. According to management, the short delay will allow for hostel fumigation and environmental sanitation.

The meeting ended with both NANS Southwest and the university management promising to continue working together to improve student welfare and ensure that the loss of Osunlakin Grace leads to lasting change.
