The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has called on the Osun Internal Revenue Service (OIRS) to resolve complaints over alleged duplicate tax-clearance payments, warning that students should not face academic disruption because of delays in verifying existing records.
The association issued the position in a joint press statement dated October 20, 2026, signed by Zonal Coordinator Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, popularly known as BILLIONCODES, and Assistant General Secretary Comrade Abubakar Musefiu D, known as GOLDEN SON.
According to the statement, the association reviewed a petition and reports from NANS JCC Osun and engaged students who reported demands ranging from ₦8,000 to ₦10,000. Other complaints concerned delays in verifying parental tax records and fresh payment requests during subsequent academic sessions.
NANS said some students had reportedly been unable to complete registration while waiting for their existing records to be verified, while making another payment allegedly allowed them to proceed.
The student leaders called on OIRS Acting Chairman, Alhaji Solanke Hamzat, to explain the legal basis for the charges, approved rates, payment obligations and procedures for verifying parental tax records.
They also demanded a clear distinction between legitimate new assessments and duplicate collections, particularly where students present evidence of previous compliance.
Students Asked to Keep Payment Evidence
NANS Southwest Zone D directed affected students to suspend payment of the specific tax-clearance charges being challenged in the Osun JCC petition until the complaints are clarified and resolved. The association emphasised that the instruction does not cover tuition or other undisputed school fees.
It urged OIRS and affected institutions to suspend enforcement against students with genuine verification complaints and ensure that pending checks do not prevent them from completing registration or sitting examinations.
Students were encouraged to preserve receipts, portal screenshots and payment demands and submit them through their Students’ Union leadership to NANS JCC Osun.
The association also warned against alleged intimidation or academic victimisation of students who raise concerns, saying such cases would be challenged through appropriate channels.
Seven-Day Deadline
NANS gave OIRS until Tuesday, October 27, 2026, to respond in writing to the petition reportedly submitted by NANS JCC Osun on October 8 and begin a documented process to resolve the complaints.
The association is demanding disclosure of the legal basis, approved rates, revenue codes and assessment procedures; a breakdown of collections by institution and academic session; effective alternatives where electronic verification fails; reconciliation and refunds for payments established to be duplicate, excessive or unauthorised; and written assurances protecting students from academic penalties and retaliation.
NANS said it would organise coordinated peaceful picketing and protests at OIRS and other relevant locations if the agency failed to take meaningful action before the deadline. It stated that any protest would be orderly and maintain access for emergency services.
The association appealed to Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Osun State House of Assembly and relevant oversight authorities to intervene, adding that students and their families deserved clear assessments and accountability for payments collected.
While reaffirming its support for lawful taxation, NANS said administrative requirements should not place students at risk of losing access to essential academic processes. OIRS’s response was not included in the statement provided for this report.
